Bangkok, Aug 22 (UNI) Srettha Thavisin from the Pheu Thai Party was elected as the new Prime Minister of Thailand by a joint vote of the lower and upper house of the parliament on Tuesday.

The results of the vote was announced by the vice-speaker of the Thai Parliament, Pichet Chuamuangphan, who presided over the meeting, according to the broadcast of the Thai PBS channel.

The vote took place after a five-hour debate on the candidacy of Thavisin, who headed one of the largest real estate firms in the country before entering politics. His opponents made claims to the candidate related to his business in the past, but they failed to convince those deputies and senators who decided to support Thavisin.

As a result, Thavisin was supported by deputies of the lower house from 11 parties of the coalition created the day before, led by the Pheu Thai party, and a significant part of senators.
